Community Connectors: Serving individuals and families in Washington
Jason’s story
Jason Hauff, community engagement manager at UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Washington, believes in the importance of serving.
“I did serve my country, but now I serve my community,” Jason said.
Jason began working for UnitedHealthcare after serving in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed in San Diego, California. After searching for a role that gave him that similar sense of purpose, he found what he was looking for through hands-on community health outreach. Nine years later, he’s still drawn to the work.
Across 17 counties, Jason works with community-based organizations, external partners and providers to plan, implement and coordinate events focused on health, wellness and member needs.
“We do a lot of outreach and engagement with our providers and our community partners,” Jason said. “I also work on events … trying to close gaps in population health, like mammograms, flu shot events, any kind of vaccination, Hep C awareness testing, colonoscopy … all of that kind of stuff.”
For Jason, it’s important to help people understand what health care resources are available to them, as well as how to navigate through the health care system. Helping these families in need isn’t just part of the job, it’s personal.
“The population we serve is low-income families and individuals,” Jason said. “I was raised by a single mom and I kind of understand the struggles that they go through.”
He said part of his job is to remind people they don’t have to figure out everything out alone — that their health plan is here to support them with things like food, housing and transportation. To him, success is measured on trust, connection and meaningful conversations.
“Helping people. That’s what it’s all about.”
