How Level2 coaches help members build paths to better health

Level2 coach helps support small, lasting changes

Transcript will be available on 5/12/2025.

If you’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it may feel overwhelming — not only with the change in your daily regimen but also with the changes to your lifestyle that may help you improve.

For eligible UnitedHealthcare members, there’s a program designed to help people take charge of type 2.

UnitedHealthcare’s Level2® combines technology, tools and support to help you improve your glucose, improve your overall health and feel better. Eligible members are connected with a Level2 care team made up of doctors, nurses, registered dietitians and a coach.

Connecting to a Level2 coach

When you join Level2, one of the first people you’ll meet with is someone like Susan, a board-certified health and wellness coach and a key member of your care team. She’s here to be your guide and biggest supporter as you work to improve your type 2 and improve your overall well-being.

“One of the first questions I’ll ask somebody is, ‘What do you want to focus our time on?” Susan said.

Her focus is to help each member establish their goals and then work alongside them to help make those goals a reality.

Making meaningful changes

That first conversation with a wellness coach is all about establishing your vision.

“Some people come in knowing exactly what they want — maybe it’s lowering their A1C, losing weight or getting off a certain medication. Others need a little more time and coaching to figure that out,” Susan said.

Every individual coaching call ends with establishing clear, actionable goal — something small but meaningful to help nudge members toward the healthier life they envision. It might be taking a 10-minute walk each day, choosing more whole foods or managing stress more intentionally.

“Working with a coach is working with someone who is not going to judge you,” she said. “We’re going to help you envision where you want to be, and we’re going to help you build that bridge from where you are today to where you want to go.”

Continued support

Between individual sessions, members can stay connected through the Level2 mobile app. The app allows for real-time chat with coaches, where members can check in, ask questions or celebrate wins.

“Maybe someone sends a message saying, ‘Hey, I hit my goal!’ or maybe they’re stuck and need help adjusting it — we’re here for both,” Susan said.

And when members need more specific guidance, coaches can help them navigate to trusted resources. For example, the app offers healthy eating recipe ideas and tips they can work into their lifestyle.

Susan’s approach is focused on simple, sustainable habits that can make a real difference over time. She encourages small choices that make a big impact, like:

  • Eating more whole foods
  • Getting in daily movement
  • Finding moments to manage stress

“That, to me, is improving your condition and that’s what I work with people on.”
