A better provider search experience

UnitedHealthcare Smart Choice is bringing greater personalization and choice to the UnitedHealthcare provider search experience.

When consumers are searching for providers, they want the process to be smooth, easy and transparent — but that’s not always the case.UnitedHealthcare wants to give its members a simplified search experience that takes their preferences into account, gives information about anticipated costs and even more.

To do that, Smart Choice is launching in May 2025, giving members access to an enhanced provider search experience — one that is designed to provide greater personalization, transparency and choice. The goal is to empower members to more easily search for and find quality care that meets their personal needs. 

Here’s how it works: When members open the UnitedHealthcare® app or myuhc.com® and search for providers, they will now see Smart Choice results based on the following factors:

  • Quality care – Providers who meet criteria for safe, timely, effective and efficient quality care, utilizing UnitedHealth Premium® and credentialing status
  • Benefits – Providers who are in-network based on the member’s benefit coverage, which may result in lower total cost of care across episodes of care
  • Convenience – Providers who meet members’ personal preferences related to accessing care, including distance to travel, appointment availability, evening/weekend appointments and care setting (in-office or virtual)
  • Personal fit – Providers who meet members’ personal preferences regarding language, gender, board certification status and consumer ratings and reviews

This enhanced provider search experience is one of many actions UnitedHealthcare is taking to deliver a simpler, more connected and personal member experience. In fact, UnitedHealthcare made over 400 enhancements to its digital experience in 2024 and plans to complete a similar amount in 2025 and 2026. UnitedHealthcare has a bold agenda when it comes to its digital experience as it works to create a simpler, more intuitive health care experience.
